About the Pace Calculator

Pace is the time one kilometre or mile takes you, and it is the number most training plans are written in. Enter a distance and your finishing time and this calculator gives pace per km and per mile, speed in km/h and mph, and what the same pace would produce over a mile, 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon.

How to use the Pace Calculator

  1. Enter the distance and choose kilometres or miles.
  2. Enter your time in hours, minutes and seconds.
  3. Read your pace per km and per mile, and your speed.
  4. Use the finish-time table to set a goal pace for longer races.

The formula behind it

Pace = total time ÷ distance. Speed = 3600 ÷ pace in seconds. One mile = 1.609344 km.

Frequently asked questions

What pace is a 25-minute 5K?

25 minutes over 5 km is 5:00 per km, or about 8:03 per mile.

What pace do I need for a 4-hour marathon?

Four hours over 42.195 km is about 5:41 per km, or 9:09 per mile.

Will I really hold the same pace in a marathon?

Rarely. Most people slow over longer distances, so a 5K pace multiplied up is an upper bound, not a prediction. Treat the table as the pace you would need, not a forecast.

Why are min/km and min/mile so different?

A mile is about 61% longer than a kilometre, so each mile takes about 1.61 times as long at the same effort.

How is speed related to pace?

They are inverses. A 6:00 per km pace is 10 km/h; a faster pace means a smaller pace number but a higher speed.
