Tip Calculator with Bill Split

Working out 18% of an awkward number while everyone stares at the bill is nobody’s idea of a good evening. Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, say how many people are paying, and this calculator gives the tip, the total, and the amount each person owes.

How to use it

  1. Enter the bill total before the tip.
  2. Choose a common tip percentage or type your own.
  3. Set the number of people sharing the bill.
  4. Read the per-person amount — round it up if you want to keep the maths simple at the table.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

Customs vary widely. In the United States 15–20% is standard for table service, in much of Europe rounding up or 5–10% is normal, and in Japan tipping is not expected at all.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the more common convention and is slightly cheaper. Enter whichever total you prefer to base the tip on.

What if a service charge is already included?

If the bill already shows a service charge or gratuity, no further tip is expected. Set the tip percentage to 0 and use the calculator purely to split the bill.

Can it split the bill unevenly?

This tool splits evenly. For an uneven split, calculate the tip percentage here and then apply that same percentage to each person’s own subtotal.
