GPA Calculator (4.0 Scale)

A GPA is a credit-weighted average, not a simple one, so a poor grade in a four-credit course hurts far more than the same grade in a one-credit elective. Add each course with its grade and credit hours and this calculator returns the weighted GPA on the 4.0 scale.

How to use it

  1. Add a row for each course you are counting.
  2. Select the letter grade you received and enter the credit hours.
  3. Add or remove rows until your full semester or transcript is listed.
  4. Read the weighted GPA and the total credits at the bottom.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my GPA lower than the average of my grades?

Because credits weight the calculation. Two As in one-credit classes and one C in a five-credit class average to a B by eye, but the GPA lands much closer to the C.

Does this handle weighted or honours GPA?

It uses the unweighted 4.0 scale. Schools that award 5.0 for AP or honours courses use their own scale, so check the published policy before relying on the number.

How do I calculate a cumulative GPA across semesters?

List every course from every semester in one go. Averaging semester GPAs is only correct if each semester carried identical credit loads.

Do pass or fail courses count?

Usually not toward GPA, though they typically count toward credits earned. Leave them out of the calculation unless your institution says otherwise.
