About the Grade Calculator
Most courses weight homework, tests and the final differently, so a plain average of your marks is wrong. Enter each category with its grade and weight and this calculator returns your true weighted grade. Switch to final-exam mode to see the score you need on the last assessment to finish on your target — and whether that target is still reachable.
How to use the Grade Calculator
- Add a row for each graded category: its name, your grade as a percentage, and its weight in the course.
- Choose “What do I need on the final?” and enter the final exam’s weight and the course grade you are aiming for.
- Read your current weighted grade, then the score required on the final.
- Change the target to see how the requirement moves — one grade boundary usually costs 3–6 points on the final.
The formula behind it
Weighted grade = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ(weight). Needed on final = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, with weights as fractions of the course.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight counted. A 90 worth 20% and an 80 worth 30% give (90×20 + 80×30) ÷ 50 = 84.
What if my weights do not add up to 100?
The calculator divides by the weight you have entered, so the result is your grade so far. In final-exam mode it warns you when categories plus the final exceed 100%, which usually means a typo.
Can I need more than 100% on the final?
Yes. When the answer is above 100 the target is out of reach without extra credit; the calculator says so rather than hiding it. Lower the target to find the best grade still possible.
Does the letter grade match my school?
The letter shown uses the common US 4.0-style scale (93+ is A, 90+ is A−, and so on). Many schools differ, so check your syllabus; the percentage is the part that always applies.
Is a dropped lowest score handled?
Not automatically. Remove the dropped assessment from its category, or enter the category’s average after the drop, then calculate.
