Because the denominator defines the size of each piece. Adding thirds to quarters is like adding a distance in miles to one in kilometres — you must first convert both to the same unit, in this case twelfths.
Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. 18/24 has a GCD of 6, which reduces it to 3/4.
The calculation is undefined and the tool reports an error. Division by zero has no meaningful result in ordinary arithmetic.
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The whole part is the quotient and the remainder becomes the new numerator, so 17/5 becomes 3 and 2/5.
